Songs from Land & Sea. Concert at URC, 2.00-5.00
Their material ranges over traditional and contemporary songs on a variety of themes (often written by friends and local artistes as well as nationally known ones) in addition to maritime songs and Les’s own self-penned compositions.
Les Sullivan, singer and guitarist, got involved in the folk scene in the 1980s, via various musical genres, and started writing and recording his own folk songs in the 1990s – many of which can now be heard in song sessions and concerts around the UK and abroad (and two of which were recorded by Kitty and Derek on their own CD). He has been a popular guest at folk and maritime festivals in most parts of the country, from Lancashire to Devon.
Kitty Vernon, who has been singing in choirs, festivals and folk clubs since her teens, has been contributing songs and harmonies to Les’s performances and recordings for over 20 years, since they were both members of Uxbridge folk club.
Kitty and Les met Derek Burgess early in the 21st century, when he was leading song sessions with other Dorset-based singers at the Wimborne and Swanage folk festivals, and he too has been recorded singing harmonies on Les’s most recent CDs.
Kitty and Derek have been performing as a duo at folk clubs and festivals since 2005, and Les’s move to Dorset in 2019 has enabled all three to join together regularly to perform live as the Dorset Silvertones.
